A Master Course in Pressure Washing
Let’s begin this course with the basics and one of the least known matters regarding pressure washing: pressure vs power washing. What is power washing or the difference you ask? Well, let’s start with what you are familiar with. Pressure washing is the use of highly pressurize Cold water to clean. Power washing is the use of highly pressurized Hot water to clean. It will be challenging at best to find a DIY pressure washer unit which has a hot water coil to allow for power washing.
Are there any benefits to power washing vs pressure only? My apologies for answering my own question with a question but would you wash your dishes with cold water? Only if you don’t have the option of hot water, and the results would be sub-par. It’s just that simple. The heated water aids in lifting and removing grime. There is a good chance that you would not wash your dishes without detergent either.
We have all see those commercials where the marketed brand demonstrates its cleaning and grease cutting power. That same principle applies to pressure and power washing as well. A good detergent will aid your efforts to lift and remove stubborn stains such as oil in your driveway to mold and algae elsewhere. Now, combine the cleaning power of heated water of a power wash and a professional grade detergent, and cleaning time will be reduced while providing better results.
This would be a good time to intro a new form of washing: soft washing. All surfaces and pressures are not created equal. Level concrete surfaces, such as parking lots and driveways, will often allow maximum pressure and quite often require it. Other surfaces, such as house siding, will require the delicate touch of soft washing. This is where you dial back the pressure on your unit’s pump and/or change the nozzle tip on your gun. Nearly all DIY units found at retail will not have a pressure regulator on the pump for adjustments, so nozzle tip changing will be your only option.
Last lesson is determining which is more important between PSI (pressure per square inch) and GPM (gallons per minute). Many DIY’ers place their consideration solely on PSI. Understandably so, pressure washing and PSI are closely related terms. However, of the two, GPM is leading the way when clearing lifted grime from a surface. Here is one way of looking at it: GPM measures the unit’s water flow. The greater the water flow, the quicker and more efficiently one can clean a surface. It is basically the rinse cycle or stage of dish washing.
How about we put some numbers to GPM? An upper tier gas powered DIY unit costing roughly $400 and having a PSI rating around 3000 will probably have a GPM rating in the range of 2.3 to 2.5. To barely cross into the territory of professional grade GPM, you would need a unit with at least 4 GPM. Some professional units can be rated at 5.5 GPM and higher.
